Water for Life

In Darfur, Sudan, over 300,000 people have died since 2003 as a result of civil unrest, lack of food and disease. Two million children, women and men are refugees, with little food, drinkable water, protection or hope. The U.N. has identified Darfur as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. Without water children, women and men perish. Without water, cattle and goats can’t live or give milk. Without water, seed dries up and can’t produce luscious green crops.

The children of Green Valley United Methodist Church are stepping out to assist in this crisis. The children have identified providing Water for Life in the Sudan as their mission project for the 2008-09 school year. They are collecting offerings each week in Children’s Church, The Journey and Pioneer Clubs to begin the process of digging wells. It takes approximately $30.00 to dig down one meter. Productive wells must be 30 and 60 meters deep. After digging the well, pumps and distribution equipment are required.

The Water for Life project is in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR - www.umcor.org). This means that the entire amount given to the Water Project goes to support the mission; none is held back to cover administrative costs. UMCOR is a registered humanitarian aid provider for Sudan. UMCOR has opened a field office in Darfur, one of the hardest hit regions of Sudan where hunger is rampant, to provide emergency supplies including food, water buckets and utensils.

The children invite you to join them in providing Water for Life.
